Without a shared reference system, corrugated packaging orders like to go wrong. Buyers that work from verbal descriptions or informal shorthand usually end up with mismatched shipments to sort through, reorder costs to absorb and awkward conversations with operations about why the wrong structure showed up at the warehouse. Add multiple suppliers from across different countries into the picture (each with their own naming conventions) and the whole process gets even messier.
FEFCO codes were built to cut out that ambiguity. A single four-digit number describes a box structure well enough that the buyer and the supplier know what’s needed – no back and forth, no misread specs. For a buyer who just inherited a supplier list that’s full of unfamiliar boxes and measurements, a shared universal language like that can save quite a bit of time and money.
The system covers over 200 corrugated designs and has been formally adopted alongside ESBO across multiple countries. Even so, plenty of procurement teams still write their specs in plain language and leave it for their suppliers to fill in the blanks. At high volumes or when you’re working across borders, the difference between what you wrote and what you actually receive tends to get expensive pretty fast.
There are three areas to get right with FEFCO codes in procurement – which codes apply to your most common use cases, how to embed them correctly in sourcing specs and where the system hits its limits. Get all three right and the spec-related back and forth with suppliers drops off quite a bit – across every product category a buyer works with. Miss any of them and the same errors come back – the ones that didn’t have to happen.

What the FEFCO Box Style Codes Are
FEFCO stands for the European Federation of Corrugated Board Manufacturers, which is a trade organization that has put together a universal numbering system for corrugated box styles. Packaging buyers and suppliers all over the world use these codes as a shared reference when they place and fulfill orders – without them, it would be a much messier conversation to get two parties to agree on a particular box design.

Before this system existed, there was no shared language for packaging specs. A buyer could describe a box one way, and a supplier halfway around the world might interpret that as a very different product. That disconnect caused wrong shipments, wasted materials and entire orders that then had to be redone from scratch.
A standardized code takes the uncertainty out of the process – each FEFCO number refers to one particular box construction, with no room left for anyone to read it differently. Place an order with a code, and your supplier already knows just what style to produce – no back-and-forth emails, no follow-up calls and no misunderstandings about what you meant.
This part of the conversation doesn’t get nearly enough attention – it’s also the case in procurement. Most buyers manage multiple supplier relationships at once – relationships usually spread across different countries and very different industries. Without a shared standard to use, every new supplier that you bring on carries the potential for miscommunication. FEFCO codes are what prevent that from happening – a reliable common language that holds up no matter who you’re working with or where in the world they’re based.
A single number that can describe a box style to anyone in the industry – that’s pretty helpful shorthand to have available. The codes covered ahead are the ones that you’ll most want to know.
The Box Codes You Need to Know
The 0201 is the box – the one that comes to mind for most of us when we think of a standard shipping carton. Four flaps on top, four on the bottom, and they all fold in to meet right in the middle. Few box styles are as widely used as this one, and you can see why – you’ll find it across virtually every industry out there, from food and drinks to electronics to wholesale distribution.
The 0427 is a low-sided open-top tray that locks itself together – with no glue and no tape needed. Retailers like it because it can go straight from the warehouse floor to a shelf display without much extra work, and it also holds up well under stacking pressure, so your products are going to stay secure and presentable right at the point of sale.

These two codes together cover most of what procurement teams are actually buying from day to day. When a supplier sends over a quote or a catalog page, if you know these numbers, you can move faster on decisions – there’s no need to chase down samples or track down extra paperwork. It’s a small bit of product knowledge, but it goes a long way in the buying process when lead times are tight, and you have to make a quick call. In my experience, teams that know their box codes just move more efficiently across the board.
Box Styles That Are Worth a Second Look
Self-erecting boxes are in a category all their own, and styles 0711 and 0713 are the two most common ones worth your attention. They fold into shape on their own (no extra assembly steps needed), which makes them a natural fit for high-volume fulfillment operations.
A warehouse setting makes the stakes pretty obvious. A single picker can go through hundreds of boxes in a day, and every extra second spent on box assembly is time pulled away from everything else they need to get done. The 0215 and 0216 styles take care of that problem – they snap right into shape on their own with no assembly needed. Multiply that time savings across a full team over the course of a week, and the difference in labor hours starts to add up in a way that’s hard to argue with.

Direct-to-consumer shipping played a big part in bringing these designs into the mainstream. Once businesses started to send single orders straight to customers (instead of full pallets to stores), the pressure on fulfillment speed rose quite a bit. Self-erecting designs gave warehouses a way to keep pace without the need for more staff.
With all that said, buyers still default to 0201. Some of it’s habit and some of it’s that 0201 has a long track record in the industry – it’s a known quantity. That comfort level means something. The pack line does demand a bit more from the team on it, though. For operations that move high-order volumes every day, that trade-off deserves a harder look.
The 0215 and 0216 aren’t a universal fit for every product or warehouse setup – and I’d never push either one on an operation that doesn’t actually need them. That said, for buyers who source packaging for fast-moving consumer goods or subscription box programs, these two styles do deserve a place in the conversation.
Add the Right FEFCO Code to Your RFQ
The exact FEFCO code belongs in every Request for Quotation that you send out – it’s one of the simplest steps that you can take to get more accurate replies from your suppliers. A code removes the uncertainty from the process, and unlike a written description, it reads the same way in whatever country your supplier is in.

This does matter when you’re sourcing quotes from manufacturers across multiple countries. A buyer who works with suppliers in three different countries at once has almost no room for specs that are vague or loosely worded. One shared code gets everybody on the same page right from the start – no accidents, no going back and forth over what you actually meant.
The payoff is real. With the right codes in place from the start, you get fewer emails going back and forth, your lead times get shorter, and quotes come back faster. A thirty-second code check before anything gets sent out is a pretty fair trade-off for that.
Two traps are worth watching for – a missing code and an outdated one. Leave the code out, and your supplier is left to interpret what you need from the packaging description alone. That interpretation won’t always line up with what you had in mind. An outdated code is a quieter problem, and in my experience, it’s one of the more frustrating ones to untangle after the fact. Production can travel a long way in the wrong direction before anyone catches it. Always cross-check against the latest FEFCO catalog instead of relying on memory or on old documentation.
At the RFQ stage, it’s one of the smaller details that pays off far more than the effort it takes. A correct code from the very start protects your timeline, makes sure your suppliers are on the same page and gets rid of one of the most common sources of miscommunication in packaging procurement. Make it standard practice in every quote request that you send out.
When a FEFCO Code Is Not Enough
FEFCO codes are a great tool, and the system works well for standard box structures.
With that said, it was never designed to cover every possible custom configuration out there – it’s a limitation worth keeping in mind.
When your project has a particular structural need (a bespoke retail display, an unusual internal dimension, a multi-panel configuration), a code number alone won’t cover the full picture. The code is a starting point. But it’s not usually enough on its own. An engineering drawing attached to your RFQ is what fills in the rest, and it gives your supplier just what they need to quote and build your project accurately.

The drawing step is something that’s easy to miss when you’re moving fast, and a part code seems like it should be enough on its own. For non-standard packaging, the best documentation habit to build is actually a two-part one. Use the FEFCO code first to cover the base structure of the box. From there, a technical drawing picks up everything that the code leaves out – dimensions, tolerances, panel treatments and any features particular to your design. That extra detail should have a home in your documentation somewhere, and a technical drawing is the right place for it.
The FEFCO code tells your supplier where to start. The drawing is what gets them there. Without the two working together, you’re asking your supplier to fill in the gaps on their own – and in my experience, that’s right where miscommunications like to happen.
Pick the Right Box Code for Each Product
The right box style for your product is not necessarily an easy call – it’s usually where decisions start to get messy. Weight, fragility, retail shelf placement, warehouse stacking – these all pull you in different directions with FEFCO codes, and they don’t always line up the way that you’d want them to.
A heavy auto component and a glass candle are about as different as two products can get on the packaging front. The auto part should have a reinforced box that can take actual weight and movement without giving way. The candle needs soft cushioning, snug interior walls and a format that holds it securely upright. A one-size-fits-all box just doesn’t cut it when the products themselves have needs that are so different.

A few factors are worth going through before you settle on anything – how heavy the product is, whether pallets will be stacked on top in storage and whether the opening needs to work for a retail display. Those factors will narrow your options way faster than any catalog ever could.
One of the most helpful steps a procurement buyer can take at this stage is to ask the supplier for physical samples of two or three code options before committing to a full production run. An order placed on price alone (without actually seeing the product first) can turn into a delivery of damaged goods and a very uncomfortable conversation with the client – it’s a mistake that I still see far too frequently.
