That knowledge gap can get expensive in a hurry. Pick the wrong board grade, and you’re looking at crushed pallets, punctured cartons, or flat-out denied damage claims – carriers do check certification before they’ll honor any losses. A box that’s massively over-spec’d for what you’re shipping is wasted material cost – multiply that across every order and it starts to add up.

The two tests are around for a reason, and neither one is the right answer in every situation – it mostly depends on how your boxes move through the supply chain. Whether they ride stacked on pallets the whole way or travel loose through a courier network matters. So does whether the contents are fragile or fairly tough. Those are the variables that determine which rating will actually protect your freight.

ECT is a rating that’s built around stacking strength, and it’s the better fit for pallet-based shipping where vertical compression is the main concern. Mullen measures how well the board can take puncture and impacts, which matters a whole lot more in a parcel environment. A working knowledge of the two ratings is one of the best ways to protect your freight and get your packaging costs under control at the same time.

What the ECT and Mullen Tests Actually Measure

Corrugated box strength is rated by two main standards (the ECT and the Mullen Test), and even though they serve similar purposes, they don’t actually measure the same property at all. The ECT (or Edge Crush Test) measures how much vertical pressure a corrugated box can take before it gives out. When boxes are stacked in a warehouse, the ones at the bottom carry the full weight of everything above them, and all that force lands directly on the edges. The ECT was built to replicate just that scenario and to put a number on it.

What the ECT and Mullen Tests Actually Measure

The Mullen Test takes a different angle. Where the other test measures stacked pressure, the Mullen Test is about how much force it takes to push straight through the board. It’s a number that matters quite a bit when a box takes a hard hit during shipping or when it ends up wedged against something with a sharp edge.

The two tests are governed by standards set by TAPPI – the Technical Association of the Pulp and Paper Industry. The ECT is covered under TAPPI standard T 811, and the Mullen Test is covered under T 810. With these standards in place, manufacturers and shippers have a universal way to measure and compare box strength across different products and suppliers.

The two tests matter because crushed boxes and punctured boxes are two different problems, and each one shows a different weakness in the board. A box could be rated for heavy stacking pressure and still fail against a sharp hit – or the other way around. The ECT and the Mullen Test are each designed to identify a different weak point, and without the two numbers in front of you, you’re only working with half the picture.

How ECT Became the New Standard

Palletized shipping took over in the 1990’s as the new industry standard. From that point forward, boxes spent most of their time stacked on top of each other instead of being handled one at a time.

That move changed what shippers actually needed from their boxes. Stacking strength became the number that mattered most, and the ECT rating measured just that – it didn’t take long for ECT to become the standard for manufacturers and shippers across the industry.

Cost was a big part of why that change happened. ECT-rated boards use less material than Mullen-rated ones do, which means a box can still hold up well under stack pressure but be lighter and cheaper to produce. For operations that move thousands of shipments every month, those savings can grow pretty fast – and for high-volume shippers, that alone was more than enough reason to make the switch.

How ECT Became the New Standard

The move toward ECT did raise some fair questions along the way. A box designed to resist vertical stacking pressure can still be vulnerable to rough treatment, punctures or outside knocks. As ECT became the industry standard, professionals in the packaging world started to ask themselves if some products were ending up with a little less protection than they needed.

The answer does look quite different from one shipper to the next. A retailer that moves uniform pallets of dry goods through a controlled warehouse will have different packaging needs than a person who ships irregularly shaped items across multiple carrier touchpoints. The right box spec can depend on what your product is, how it gets handled along the way and where it’s going.

Times When a Mullen Rating Matters More

ECT became the industry standard for a reason – most shippers move their boxes on pallets, and ECT was built specifically for that sort of load. Mullen testing was designed for a pretty different situation, and it can still be the right choice depending on how your product gets shipped.

Mullen testing measures how much pressure it takes to puncture the wall of a corrugated box – that force can come from the outside in or from the inside out. That makes it a much better fit for shipments where the box is actually going to take a beating instead of one that will just sit neatly on a pallet the whole time. A courier who tosses packages onto a truck, say, or a product with sharp edges that push outward against the walls from the inside – those are just the sort of scenarios where a Mullen rating ends up being the number that tells you more.

Times When a Mullen Rating Matters More

For heavy or fragile items that move through a courier network, the Mullen rating will teach you something that ECT just doesn’t account for. With a higher number, the walls of that box can take more direct force before they give way, which matters quite a bit when your package is passing through four different sets of hands and across three different stops.

That said, ECT is still the right call for most standard shipments. If your product is going out on a pallet and staying there, it probably doesn’t need the extra wall strength that a high Mullen rating gives you. The two tests are measuring different properties, and neither one is better than the other across the board – it just depends on how your shipment is handled along the way.

How the Two Ratings Are Different

A 32 ECT box and a 200 lb Mullen box fall into the same general weight class and use a pretty similar amount of material, which is why so many treat the two as if they were the same product. On paper, the numbers do make it look that way.

These two ratings aren’t measuring the same property. ECT, or Edge Crush Test, measures how well a box holds up under vertical pressure – how much stacking weight it can take before those edges give out. Mullen measures how much force it takes to burst straight through the wall of the box. It’s the same weight class but two different types of strength.

That’s where most purchasing decisions go wrong. A company might swap a 200 lb Mullen box for a 32 ECT box because the two look equivalent on a spec sheet – and at face value, that’s a fair enough comparison. The problem shows up once those boxes are stacked four or five units high in a warehouse. At that point, the Mullen rating won’t help much. ECT was built for that load, and in a warehouse environment, it’s the only number that actually matters.

How the Two Ratings Are Different

The same idea holds true as you move up through the rating tiers. A 44 ECT box and a 275 lb Mullen box fall into a pretty similar material range – just like their lower-rated counterparts. Where they can vary is in what each one is built for. One takes on stacked loads, and the other is made to resist puncture and wall pressure.

Weight class comparisons are the number one mistake that gets buyers into problems with these ratings. A matching number in the same tier doesn’t automatically mean that two boxes are going to hold up the same way once they’re out in the field.

What the Carriers Actually Check For

UPS and FedEx will accept ECT and Mullen certified boxes, which is welcome news if you haven’t decided between the two yet. Neither carrier will accept just any rating, though – each of them has a minimum threshold that your box needs to meet, and if it falls short of that number, you won’t have coverage if something gets damaged along the way.

That last part deserves a little extra attention. A damaged shipment is already a rough situation. But a denied damage claim on top of that is a whole different level of frustrating. If your box falls below the carrier’s minimum rating at the time of the claim, the carrier has every right to reject it – and they will, no question.

What the Carriers Actually Check For

In the United States, the domestic ground freight minimums are largely set by Item 222 of the National Motor Freight Classification – or the NMFC, as it’s usually known. Most carriers use this framework when they review whether a box meets their standards. It’s the standard behind every shipping label out there. It’s a good idea to get familiar with it if you move freight with any regularity.

The exact ECT or Mullen minimum for your box size and total shipment weight is an important measurement to finalize before you settle on a packaging choice. Most packaging decisions are made on price or out of habit, and carrier compliance hardly ever makes it into the conversation. That difference between what you’re assuming and what the carrier is actually checking for is usually where damage claims fall apart.

Pick the Right Test for Your Box

The right choice between ECT and Mullen can depend on how your boxes travel and where they end up. Palletized shipments that get stacked neatly and stay put are a great match for ECT – it’s built to manage that top-to-bottom compression. Mullen is a much better fit for boxes that ride with couriers or pass through hands along the way – it resists punctures and rough treatment much better than ECT does.

Humidity is its own concern, separate from shipping altogether – it’s a quiet problem that can wear down a box’s strength long before the package ever arrives. A box that has passed the right tests can still fall apart if it spends time in a damp warehouse or travels through a humid region without the right coating or moisture protection. Neither rating tells you anything about how a box resists moisture, so you’ll need to plan for that separately. Weight distribution is another part of this that gets missed. An unevenly packed box puts extra stress on its corners and edges in ways that neither test accounts for on its own. A well-rated box can still buckle if the weight inside isn’t spread out evenly – and once that happens, whatever rating is printed on the side doesn’t mean much.

Pick the Right Test for Your Box

The cost side of this needs your focus from the start. A box spec that’s rated too high means you’re paying for more board strength than your shipments actually need – that extra cost adds up across every pallet and every shipment and every month. Go too low, and you’re stuck with damage claims, returns, and replacement costs every time something gets crushed in transit. Either extreme can get expensive fast.

You want to match your spec to your shipping conditions – your routes and your climate and the weight of your loads – so you’re not losing money on either end. Get that right, and your packaging will hold up for a long time.
